Industrial home in Seattle designed to look like a shipping container house

Coates Design Architects are responsible for the design of this modern industrial home constructed for an accomplished musician and music teacher, located near Seattle, Washington. Nestled on a large site, there is plenty of sunshine and views for which this home was customized. The client requested that the architects provide a special place for her baby grand piano to resonate throughout the home.

The couple was intrigued by the idea of building a container house from real containers. Coates Design researched the idea โ€“ searching for a โ€œsweet spotโ€ that could utilize containers in a manner that required as little alteration as possible, taking advantage of their natural structural integrity.

The alternative was to force them into a different role that required significant alterations. Considerable research was spent on the topic, finding that transport and install costs made the idea of a container house less desirable. The architects instead arrived at a more cost-effective solution of traditional wood framing.

The stacks were widened since real container interiors are cramped, but the plan still reflects the original idea and is accentuated with industrial corrugated metal that will naturally rust. The baby grand piano will soon be moved into its custom-designed spot where it will fill the air with music.

What We Love: This project is a perfect example of how good design doesn’t need to be expensive. The stick-built solution saved money and the design was maintained to still appear like it was constructed from shipping containers.

Tell Us: Do you think the architects did a good job of retaining some of the original “container home” idea in the overall design aesthetic? Please share your thoughts in the Comments below!

Here’s one thing I want to know how much did this cost to be built? How long did it take for this home to be built? How many containers were used and why does it look so huge? One thing that I have noticed is that most construction companies charge the same price to build a container home they would charge to build a traditional home. This is something I went through a few years ago when I was looking to have a container home built but , I decided to build a brick house or metal house since the… Read more »

I think they did a great job of giving the client what they asked for with in reason. I have only one question how did the container cost get so out of what out projects seem to be?
People are buying a $1,000 to 4,000 a container so where did the big difference come from on this project?
