This farmhouse modern home was designed by Michael Abraham Architecture, located on the shores of Lake Geneva, in southeastern Wisconsin. The design for this residence was inspired by Wisconsin’s agricultural heritage. The home is set on a hillside, where there is a 10-foot drop from the front to the rear of the house. Extending down the hillside are three stories of glass, framing captivating views of the glistening lake. The area is surrounded by old-world farmhouses, so the concept of farmhouse-modern fit well into the architectural style of this home.
Considering the scale of the home and the expanses of glass, the plan also needed to incorporate current elements. The overall design references the local vernacular, featuring classic gables, stained cedar wood siding and indigenous stones on the exterior facade. On the interior, highlights include hand-hewn beams and exposed timbers. These elements help to create a stylish yet tranquil feel to this countryside oasis. Another nod to farmhouse style is the series of stone walls that connects the garden to the entryway and in through the great room and out to the backyard staircase.
What We Love: This stunning farmhouse modern home is surrounded by beautiful gardens and a peaceful lakeside setting. Large expanses of picture windows helps to capture the idyllic views and invite nature inside from almost every angle. The project team did a fantastic job of infusing the farmhouse vernacular architecture into this home while incorporating modern elements. Above: The roof is a Vermont slate, while the exterior stone is a mix of stone called the Basswood line from the Halquist Stone Company in Wisconsin. The doors and windows (in a dark brown) are from Kolbe. The French doors are 72″ wide. The metal on the house is from Berridge and the color is zinc. A solarium entry into the home makes you feel like you are walking into a glass box, inviting the outdoors-inside.
Above: Adding a more contemporary aesthetic to the living room is a white oak paneled wall, laid up horizontally. The exquisite stone surrounding the fireplace is Indiana Limestone. The light fixture above the space is Ochre’s “Arctic Pear” chandelier. Supporting the second-story bridge are Douglas fir timbers.
Above: The homeowners mainly entertain family and friends, so they prefer to eat in the kitchen and informal dining area. Benches were selected for the formal dining since the table is primarily used for a spread of hors d’oeuvres.
Above: The first floor living space is approximately 4,400 square feet, not including the garages.
Above: Hand-hewn beams on the ceiling with metal brackets lends a nod to the farmhouse modern aesthetic. The dark-stained oak ceilings provides a stark contrast to the crisp, clean white walls.

Above: In the informal dining room, lakeside views creates a peaceful atmosphere. The homeowners wanted low-maintenance finishes and furnishings in areas of high traffic. The family uses this space when entertaining, so the Louis Ghost Chairs from Design Within Reach was a fantastic selection for easy to wipe clean!
Above: The master bedroom offers large picture windows that looks out over the peaceful lakeside setting. At the foot of the bed is a custom fabricated leather cabinet with a pop-up television. The bed is covered in soft linens sourced from Bedside Manor.
Above: In the master bathroom, the countertops are white marble, while the cabinets are a French white melamine laminate. A light color palette was selected to not detract from the great outdoors. The flooring is limestone in a sea grass hue. Adding cozy texture to the space is a wool rug sourced from Room & Board.
