Old fishing cottage transformed into serene retreat in Western Wisconsin

A fishing cottage has been transformed by Albertsson Hansen Architecture into a modern and serene retreat, located in Western Wisconsin. This cabin was once a fishing cottage, set on the site of a resort that was constructed in the 1920’s. The resort was nestled on a small lake that was not far from the Twin Cities. The 2,775 square foot cabin has had multiple additions over the years, yet it felt very disconnected.

The architects were charged with the task of improving the flow to the outdoor space, creating a family friendly kitchen, and relocating a bigger master bedroom on the lake side. The solution was to bring the kitchen from the back of the cabin up to the front, reduce the size of an overly large bedroom in the back in order to create a more generous front entry way/mudroom adjacent to the kitchen, and add a fireplace in the center of the main floor.

Key Highlights: Windows were replaced and expanded, exterior siding was replaced and painted black. In the loft above, inviting built-in bunks were designed to provide cozy places for kids to sleep

Jennaea Gearhart Design was responsible for the interior design of this charming lake house. The designer re-invented this beloved retreat using traditional materials in a modern way.

What We Love: This serene retreat offers some fabulous aesthetics, with its white palette and organic wood textures. The style mix of vintage and new furnishings adds a beautiful touch. The overall look is very soothing and inviting. The black exterior adds a visual contrast from the white interior palette. It also blends beautifully into the wooded surroundings of this lakeside setting. We are left feeling inspired… Readers how about you? Would this be your ideal cabin retreat?
