Inside a ranch-style home with breathtaking views of the Santa Lucia Preserve

traditional-exterior

This stunning ranch-style home created by BAR Architects is nestled in the contours of the surrounding landscape in the Santa Lucia Preserve, California. Situated on a sprawling 19 acres of property, this dwelling was designed to take full advantage of the regionโ€™s climate with a veranda, patio, and pool. Created as a vacation retreat for a family from England, this home boasts 9,700 square feet of living space.

The residence was conceived of multiple wings interconnecting to form small, low-building structures. There are formal entertaining spaces and two wings for the six guest bedrooms, along with a master suite featuring a private master living room and his and her areas. The architects designed the wings to form a courtyard, as well as private landscaped zones next to the living areas. A sense of luxury is created through a subtle yet complex layering of furnishings within the elegantly proportioned rooms.

Within the context of the terrain, you will find the main house and a pool house, masterfully planned and designed. The structures were integrated within the landscape to take advantage of both the courtyard and outdoor terraces. This helps to seamlessly blend indoor-outdoor living spaces and create a natural transition into the surrounding grasslands.

โ€œInterior floor elevations and low sloped roof forms trace the natural slope of the site, conveying the appearance that the structures grow naturally out of the surrounding grassland,โ€ states the architects. The structures are intermingled with the existing Oak trees, anchoring the house and framing views from the home.

From a distance, you are only able to view parts of the structure through the trees. This helps to make the home feel more integrated within its natural landscape. Expansive verandahs run along the side of the home that overlooks a golf course on the property. The extended roof overhangs provide shelter from the elements during the warm summer months.

The material palette selection was in keeping with the traditional ranch house style, simple and practical. The exterior facade is clad with mainly wood siding. While the roof material on all structures is wood shake. Generous eaves feature copper gutters and exposed eave framing. The retaining walls are composed of stone and are in keeping with the hues of the site.

What We Love: This ranch-style home on the Santa Lucia Preserve features bright and airy living spaces with a causal yet elegant design aesthetic. We especially love the design of the dining room. From the wood ceiling beams, that add a hint of rustic to the space to the industrial factory windows; merging indoors with the outdoors. Overall a beautiful home crafted for family living and entertaining.
