Modern log cabin perched on a cliff overlooking Coeur D’Alene Lake

rustic living room

Designed by Uptic Studios, the goal of this project was to create a modern log cabin nestled on a cliff, on Coeur D’Alene Lake in North Idaho. This vacation home was designed to house two families comfortably under one roof, while offering seperate spaces for privacy and common rooms to spend quality time together.

The result is a five bedroom, four-and-a-half bathroom, 3,182-square-foot cabin retreat (4 pods, 750 square feet each, plus a 200-square-foot bridge) nested into the site overlooking the lake. A delicate balance of natural materials and custom amenities fill the interior living spaces, while incredible lake views have been maximized at almost every angle.

Above: The window also acts as a serving station and bar area, allowing guests on the large ipe wood deck to engage with those in the kitchen. The window is actually a storefront door system, and depending on the manufacturer there are some in-swing systems as well. This window was sourced from Kawneer.

What We Love: This modern log cabin offers an enviable getaway, so warm and inviting with beautiful views. This is one of those rare projects that is very contemporary yet offers a sense of place. Overall, the aesthetics are strong, bold, and masculine, yet clean, tasteful, and well lit. Interesting architecture elements throughout with rich color contrasts. Would love to vacation here, how about you?

Above: Wanting to maximize outdoor space, the architects avoided using columns on the deck. Instead a steel beam system was used to support the cantilevered roof and allow windows to extend all the way to the ceiling.
