A modern geometrically designed family residence by Canadian architectural firm TACT Design is located in the woodsy neighborhood of Cedarvale, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The architects worked with unconventional materials to construct this 4,300 square foot smart home that is clad with aluminum panels. The front exterior facade features Cor-Ten steel and behind its weathering burnt-orange panels is a sunlit interior, wooded landscape views and the latest in smart technology. The homeowners were looking for their home design to make a statement and selected its located based on its idyllic location surrounded by mature trees, meandering pathways and a ravine… not to mention that it is minutes from a bustling city. The home that originally resided in this spot was 100 years old and was decidedly more expensive to renovate than to just tear down and build anew. A very modern home with all of the latest in technology, including Control4, an automation system that manages the home’s lighting, audio, security, televisions, fireplace, heating, air conditioning and ventilation. All of the aforementioned are controlled by wi-fi, through your smart phone or i-pad. Anything that is wired can be controlled through this system, so rather than flipping switches, everything can be controlled through in-wall touch panels.
The rear facade of the property features mostly glass to take advantage of the spectacular views of the ravine. As much light as possible is captured into the home through not only windows but by a skylight at the top of the staircase on the third level. It is just like a tree house, where the upper level space is very loft-like, with an expanse of glass overlooking the treetops. One of the homeowners has a vast collection of books, so this space is used to house and enjoy her collection. The second level houses the master bedroom retreat and the couple’s two daughters rooms. The ground level is comprised of two dining rooms, a living room and kitchen area. There are three terraces, one per floor, designed with negative exterior space. A finished basement comes complete with a workout room, media room and art studio as well as a control room (where all the communication between the home’s devices happens).

What We Love: The beautiful exterior facade from the street adds warmth to the home that is rich and textural, capturing light and changing color at varying times of the day, the material is a real statement piece. There is a lot of unique design features throughout the interiors including the sculptural staircase in the center of the home. What do you think, what do you like most about this home, is there anything you would change or would have done differently?
Natural materials of wood and stone are used throughout the home to soften the modern, clean lines, making the home feel warmer and softer. The flooring throughout the home is either radiant heated porcelain tile or beautiful oak wood. The fireplace surround features black slate at the bottom, followed by Algonquin stone and finished with custom built-in walnut cabinetry for the entertainment center.
The kitchen features walnut custom cabinetry and marble countertops and backsplash.
