The homeowners loved their neighborhood in Arvada, Colorado, close to family and friends, with a rural feel (yet close to town), but their existing 1970s tri-level home was in desperate need of a remodel. They turned to KGA Studio Architects to reimagine the house with greater livability, stronger indoor-outdoor connections, and a more beautiful, low-maintenance design, expanding the home from 2,976 to 4,977 square feet in the process.
The goal was a comfortable, elegant home that felt easy to live in without tiptoeing around breakables. One of the biggest challenges was the location of the front door and foyer; relocating it allowed the center of the home to open into a seamless living space, creating an expanded kitchen and great room that now flows effortlessly from front to back.

The new front door, located to the side of the house by the garage, creates a unique approach that activates a previously overlooked part of the home.

The new entry sequence takes what was once a dark, hard to access room that had been relegated to storage and turns it into a beautiful, light-filled space with windows all along the back.

The covered outdoor living room can be accessed from either living space, with two large folding glass walls that really open things up. Views of their lot and open space to the Front Range beyond abound from the rear of the home, creating a retreat-like feel.

Above: The kitchen size increased with improved functionality and flow. Warm woods, a painted wood-slat ceiling, and a recessed ceiling over the window create a cozy, intimate feel, perfect for family meals and entertaining.

Previous renovations, predating their ownership, created a disjointed floor plan that did not serve the family’s lifestyle. The family had to move through rooms to reach other rooms in the house. The kitchen needed reorganizing and updating, and the backyard did not provide the outdoor living experience the family desired.

The home is tucked away in a rural enclave, and the homeowners were given a complete refresh to make the most of their property’s views.
