Designed by Vag Architects and Planners for a family of five, this modern mountain home is nestled amongst a forested landscape surrounded by mountains in Vail, Colorado. This rugged property also features a gently flowing creek and a pond stocked with fish. A second home for the family, they wished to take advantage of the surrounding beauty, yet also wanted their home to reflect a modern aesthetic. The homeowners didn’t want a typical mountain home, instead they asked for clean lines and contemporary styling. Cascading down a sloped site, the house looks out towards the landscape, allowing sunlight and connectivity to flow into the interiors. The architecture reflects a contemporary yet mid-century modern style reflected through the butterfly roof, glass and floor lines. Since the homeowners continually have family visiting them, there needed to have plenty of gathering spaces for entertainment. The exterior facade consists of a spectacular material palette of limestone (which is also reflected in the interiors), oak siding, as well as copper and black zinc siding panels.
On the interiors, contemporary furnishings and finishes were selected, while being mindful of their mountain setting. The main focus was on the views and the artwork, so the color palette was kept neutral and light. With neutral as a base, pops of color have been infused into each of the spaces, while trying to relate to the surrounding natural environment. The clean walls serve as a nice backdrop to showcase the homeowner’s extensive art collection. Floor-to-ceiling windows brings natural light in and allows a great indoor-outdoor connection that is found on both on both levels of the home. Upstairs, the master bedroom features sliding doors to a balcony surrounded by trees, making you feel immersed in nature.
