Magnusson Residence is an incredible contemporary renovation that was carried out by Architrix Design Studio that effectively maximizes the area on this standard sized Vancouver, British Columbia property. The corner lot presents the challenge of designing two prominent building facades while maintaining a controlled budget. The massing of the house with it’s offset roof pitches is a tribute to the highly popular massing developed in the early 50′s through to the 80′s as seen with the proliferation of the ‘Vancouver Special’. The Vancouver Special form was developed and gained mass appeal due to its low cost of construction and its structural ability to create wide open spaces beneath. An open and airy space with clean lines was achieved using a relatively simple structure through exaggerating the roof pitches and creating movement in the building facade.
