A stunning Virginia home inspired by bucolic English Cotswold architecture

English Cotswold-inspired home exterior

The Anderson Studio has designed this English Cotswold-inspired home, situated in a beautiful natural landscape in Fairfax, Virginia. The owners of this home are expert builders of large-scale construction who approached the architects with an unexpected invitation to participate in a paid competition with other architecture firms to win the opportunity to design their personal study in performance and artistry.

With an emphasis on the desire to be surrounded by high-quality materials and fine craftsmanship, they transformed a suburban collection of properties into a pastoral estate, stylistically rooted in the bucolic English Cotswold architecture, which celebrates fine American craftsmanship in every aspect of design and construction. An unbundled concept separates different functioning spaces, allowing a greater visual connection with the landscape by creating meaningful outdoor gathering areas between buildings and encouraging natural light throughout. The result is a timeless collection of modestly scaled buildings thoughtfully choreographed to create a compound that is inviting yet protective, while embracing and comforting family and friends.

The materials and finish work is just so dang busy. It’s like the owner kept telling the architect to “do more!” How could anyone actually live here?
