Slopeside retreat in Colorado with picturesque views of the continental divide

KA Designworks has created this spectacular slopeside retreat for a Chicago-based family, nestled on just over two acres in Snowmass Village, Colorado. Perched above the ski resort’s base village, the home offers carefully planned ski-in/ski-out access. With four adult children, the homeowners sought a residence that would connect them to the surrounding mountain landscape while providing a space for current and future generations to gather and enjoy.

The home’s footprint undulates through the siteโ€™s surrounding creeks, ponds, and sweeping views of the neighboring ski slopes. Using traditional forms and detailing, such as the reclaimed timber trusses, the residence also pays homage to mountain tradition while balancing clean and contemporary design. Continue below to see the rest of this sensational home tour.

The project began with a master plan envisioning a single home straddling two lots, bisected by a historic ditch that provides water rights to downstream homes and ranches. The ditch became a focal point that evolved from a simple water course into a meandering stream with cobblestone riffles, limestone drops, and serene pools.

The home was designed to extend a bridge across the stream, connecting the garage and guest home with the main house. At the lower level, a large flagstone terrace provides ski access in the winter and secluded enjoyment of the surrounding aspen forest in Summer. A walking path was designed to provide access deeper into the forest, where several moments are created using stone paving, stream crossings, bench seating, and a small pond.

What We Love: This slopeside retreat provides a fabulous ski-in/ski-out home for a family that loves spending time in the great outdoors. The meandering creek is the highlight feature of this home, and there are so many indoor-outdoor spaces where one can enjoy the tranquil sounds of the water. It helps the homeowners to relax and unwind in their home away from home. Since this home is designed for entertaining, the kitchen offers an idyllic gathering place for the family to spend time with their weekend guests.

Tell Us: Would this be your idea of the ultimate ski retreat to enjoy with family and friends? Let us know why or why not in the Comments below, we enjoy reading your feedback!

A spectacular home, beautifully constructed. However, I think too much manipulation of the surrounding environment. That said, I do realize that is what they hoped to accomplish.

What a wonderful way to split a house above an existing stream! Kudos, KA.
