This gorgeous contemporary home, called “Nature’s Edge,” was designed by James McNeal Architecture and overlooks the St. Croix River in Hudson, Wisconsin. The residence was crafted for clients who desired a large, sprawling home that didn’t look large and sprawling. The entryway is subdued because the owners did not want visitors to feel they were arriving at a huge estate.
The lot itself was challenging, due to height restrictions, a ravine, and a bluff. But these are the kinds of creative challenges the architects love. In the back, it’s not a two-story; it’s two stories farther away.

That was the only way to get the additional space without seeing the house from the river, because there were certain angles the architects had to abide by. It was a big challenge for the architects to design views to the river while maintaining the height restrictions, yet they managed to get two stories looking out to the river.

The architects designed a flat roof so that when you’re looking out to the river, you’re always getting views.

A two-story stairway leads down to the entertainment room below, which features a golf simulator and a lounge. An abundance of light was brought into the stairwell that descends to the lower level.

What We Love About This Home
What makes Nature’s Edge truly remarkable is not any single space or design decision; it’s the extraordinary coherence of the whole. Every room connects to the landscape. Every material tells the story of the place. Every detail, from the Wisconsin quarry limestone on the exterior walls to the live-edge coffee table at the heart of the great room, speaks to a philosophy of design that puts nature first and architecture second. This is a home that will only grow more beautiful, more loved, and more rooted in its remarkable site with every passing year.

Upstairs are the kids’ rooms, tucked away. At the end of the kids’ hall, the door leads to a unique porch outside that’s like an overlook. The office has a 360-degree, panoramic view.
