In Atlanta’s Decatur neighborhood, Copper Sky Design + Remodel partnered up with the owners of this 1956 ranch home to modernize their space while enhancing its midcentury character. On the exterior, new wood-look garage doors and vintage breeze blocks enhance the home’s curb appeal, while a fresh coat of paint ties everything together.
The standout feature of the project is the kitchen, where a custom curved wood tambour island adds a striking retro element. This open-concept space is warmed by wood ceiling beams and tongue-and-groove planks, creating a blend of midcentury charm and modern functionality. The adjacent breakfast nook offers a cozy spot for morning coffee, while geometric tile patterns and asymmetrical designs throughout the kitchen honor the home’s original era.
As you step inside this midcentury modern gem, notice the signature elements of the style in this entryway: a vibrant front door, clerestory windows, the slate floor, geometric shapes, and that expansive, uninterrupted wall. All of these details help to create a bright and welcoming atmosphere.
The renovation included reconfiguring the floor plan to add practical spaces, such as a laundry room, a jack-and-jill bathroom, and a pantry. The owner’s bathroom was updated with retro-inspired hexagon tiles, tying the room’s design into the home’s mid-century aesthetic.
These thoughtful updates to both the interior and exterior reflect a harmonious balance between midcentury nostalgia and modern living.
What We Love: This midcentury home renovation in Atlanta offers dreamy updates throughout, including a receded entryway, exaggerated roof hangs, and an open layout. Large windows flood the interiors with natural light, highlighting the warm wood tones and clean lines. Thoughtful details honor the home’s 1950s roots while bringing it flawlessly into the modern era.
