Flavin Architects has reimagined this stunning midcentury modern house to offer light and airy living spaces, situated in Lincoln, a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. The area plays host to numerous modernist houses, all inspired by architect Walter Gropius’s own 1940s abode, located in the vicinity.
By the time this dwelling had been constructed, modernism had evolved from the Gropius era. It now incorporates the rural vibe of the area, featuring exposed wooden beams (rough-sawn fir) and deep overhangs.
You will not find a traditional New England style home here, no enclosed walls and inward posture. Instead, you will find low-pitched roofs, an open layout, and expansive glazing that helps to blur the boundaries between indoors and out. This brilliant mid-century home was featured on the cover of the Boston Globe Magazine.

From the interiors, a neutral color palette helps to not detract from the beautiful rural countryside that surrounds the home. Richly stained wood flooring infuses warmth into the home, as does a wall of stone surrounding the fireplace in the living and family room. The stonework done on the fireplace wall has been laid in what is called an ashlar pattern.

Overall, this is a beautifully renovated midcentury modern home with stylish interiors and eye-catching architectural details.

Note: The flooring is white oak, plain sawn, 5-inch wide boards, while the finish is a custom gray ceruse stain.
This stunning kitchen has a lot of fabulous features, beginning with the spacious center island measuring 28″x83″ and 36″ in height. The cabinet color was painted in Benjamin Moore Black Pepper 2130-40. The cabinet finish is a catalyzed polyurethane paint, matte sheen. The countertops are Pental Quartz Chroma Super White. The backsplash behind the range is Heath Ceramics “Dimensional Oval” tile.

The cabinet color in the home office is Benjamin Moore Black Pepper.
The walls in the master bathroom are Thassos Marble. The floating vanity (72″x23″) is comprised of white oak in a vertical grain with a light gray ceruse finish. The countertop is a white Thassos Marble, three-quarters of an inch thick, in a honed finish. The vanity backsplash is a green tile glass mosaic, Vetrotile by Ann Sachs.
The exterior facade of the home was painted in Thunder AF-685 from Benjamin Moore.
