Heliotrope Architects, in collaboration with Amy Baker Interior Design, has designed this quietly elegant, comfortable home for a young family. It is nestled into a serene, densely wooded property near Seattle, Washington. The dwelling is organized into three connected, wood-clad, pitched-roof pavilions, and every room directly connects to the outdoors. The building finishes are elegant yet low-maintenance and eco-friendly.
The house stretches into the landscape, and all rooms have idyllic woodland views. Each wing is narrow, and the ceilings are high. Rooms flow into each other. Windows and doors extend from floor to ceiling. Natural light floods in. The house glows like a lantern at night. The roofs are simple metal-clad gables draining rainwater to half-round metal gutters. The palette is simple, clean, and unfussy. The focus is on nature and sunlight.

Their vision was for a well-used, practical space to serve as a gathering place for their family of four. The 6,000-square-foot space would seamlessly flow between indoor and outdoor activities. Both parents work from home, and their children enjoy home-centered weekends.
The design of this pavilion home in Washington focused on light-colored, natural stone countertops in durable quartzite featuring a leather finish. White oak was chosen for cabinetry and floors to create a light, neutral interior.
Light gray accents in the kitchen and Venetian plaster walls at the fireplace softened the design, creating a balanced aesthetic. The same approach was carried through to the bathrooms and other spaces, prioritizing materials that are both practical and harmonious with the home’s architecture.
A few moments of surprise, like the large-scale patterns and color in the primary bedroom and powder room wallpapers, were added to bring unexpected interest to the home.
What We Love: This beautiful Washington home provides its inhabitants with warm and welcoming spaces for family living. We love the indoor-outdoor connection of this home through large expanses of glazing and walls of disappearing glass—blurring the lines between inside and out. The woods surrounding this home offer the ultimate in privacy and seclusion while creating a relaxed living environment. Another notable feature is the pass-through window in the kitchen, perfect for entertaining on the patio!
