Built in the 1830s, Studio Fōr reimagined this farmhouse, nestled in the heart of the Hudson Valley, in the historic town of Hyde Park, which sits along the Hudson River in Dutchess County, New York. A speculative project in collaboration with custom home builder Wolcott Builders, the two-story house sits on 36 acres and is surrounded by three large barns and a pond.
The main objective was to retain the home’s historical elements, such as exposed timber members and a stone hearth, which the original owner built with the help of his children. To achieve this, the project team incorporated modern details and amenities, added purposeful elements, and provided outdoor views of the gorgeous property while maintaining the farmhouse vernacular. The result is a historic yet modern home that complements the surrounding structures.

Leading down a gravel drive past stone walls and pastures, a former farmhouse was rebuilt into a modern residence. A new pool space was created in the backyard, situated between the historic barn structures and trees. Old, broken foundations of former farm buildings were removed to create a clearing for the new pool and patio spaces.

Extensive updates to this home’s exterior facade include custom-finished solid wood siding installed vertically to resemble a traditional barn, along with horizontal siding with metal trim at select windows and doors, adding modern details.

What We Love: This newly updated Hudson Valley farmhouse offers modern, clean lines and beautiful details throughout. We love the character and charm that have been preserved in this home, from the hand-hewn beams to the exquisite stone fireplace in the living room. The surrounding landscape is incredibly peaceful, and the barn conversion into an entertainment and workout space gives it a more functional, second life.

New interior features of this home include a striking cathedral ceiling, an open stairway with steel rails, and custom millwork.

The original, enclosed front porch was removed and replaced with a 350-square-foot raised deck, accessible off the dining room.

Large swaths of grasses, perennials, and flowering shrubs create a softness and a sense of enclosure around the pool space. The grasses and flowering shrubs capture the beauty of the nearby meadows and bring it into the garden spaces in a subtle and controlled manner.

Also on the property is a 2-story, 1880s barn that was originally converted to a garage. After completing the main house project, the architect transformed the barn into a home gym and recreation space.

A fire pit was constructed using the existing stone from the foundation of an old machine shed on the property. Placed under the existing shade trees, the fire pit and stone steps connect through a no-mow fescue grass meadow up to the pool area.

An outdoor shower, changing room, and sauna were installed in the old timber-frame barn, providing easy access to the pool. The pool area was designed to serve as a connector space, tying the house to the surrounding barn structures.

BEFORE THE REMODEL

The 1830s farmhouse was dilapidated and possibly not worth saving. The architect saw the charm in the old structure and transformed it into a beautiful, contemporary sanctuary.
