TMS Architects is responsible for the design of this craftsman-style dream house situated idyllically in a stunning New England meadow in Newbury, Massachusetts. The exterior massing of the 6,700-square-foot house respects the style of the surrounding neighborhood, while also grounding the home more naturally to the site.
Large overhangs, material choices, and low slung rooms help create horizontal datum bands that connect the massing of the home attractively to the site, overlooking the meadow as it rolls towards the rear of the house. Continue below to see the rest of this gorgeous house tour…

Windows placed along the southern facade, as well as large slider doors in the great room, frame the views to the gently sloping meadow.
Outside the great room is an expansive exterior deck that leads to a wraparound farmer’s porch designed to satisfy the homeowners’ love of outdoor living.
An indigenous landscaping plan blends casually into the surrounding grounds.
Above: The exterior paint colors include Benjamin Moore Chestertown Buff HC-9 as a base (the painter tinted it slightly with burnt umber). The trim and columns were specified to match the LePage window and doors’ standard brownstone-clad color.
A charming wraparound farmer’s porch and strategic window placements frame the surrounding meadow so that the homeowners can appreciate the seasonal beauty of New England from inside or out.
An open-concept floor plan that connects the kitchen, dining room, and great room creates a less formal feel, while the two-story great room is enveloped in warm sunlight.

Above: The lights of the island are from Hubbardton Forge. The smaller pendants above the bar are their Exos Small Mini Pendant.
The kitchen was designed to accommodate both homeowners’ passion for cooking and entertaining. A wraparound outer island helps to define the cooking area while still allowing the living room, dining room, and kitchen spaces to flow into one another.
These spaces are visually connected by trim and chair rail datum bands, creating a more cohesive design solution.
The orientation of these spaces and the extensive window layout take advantage of both the views to the meadow in their backyard and allow an abundant amount of natural light into the space.
Coffered ceilings and varied finishes on the kitchen island help visually break up the space into inviting areas for family and guests. The kitchen island is made from mahogany with a satin walnut stain from Cabot to finish it off.
The interior of the house was designed with the intent of providing the homeowners with cozy and comfortable spaces that are complemented by exquisite yet casual architectural detailing.
