KMA Architecture has crafted this gorgeous alpine ranch house, perched at 8000 feet on a sprawling 160-acre property in the private residential community of Yellowstone Club in Big Sky, Montana. The views of the Spanish Peaks from this four-bedroom home are magnificent, to say the least. The property’s design highlights both rustic and modern elements, which lend it an overall timeless quality.
At High Alpine, a passion for horses is evident in the loafing barn, riding facility, pastures, and trails. This estate was updated with a new heli-barn and caretaker’s flat, a pond and stream system which encompasses geothermal heating, and a complete landscape redesign that included an incredibly cool dining pavilion and exterior living space.

Not your typical mountain lodge, this dwelling can feel intimate for family get-togethers but can also host a large group for entertaining. With the homeowners’ help, Lisa Kanning Interior Design’s vision for interior living spaces is realized. Collaborating with Highline Partners, the project’s contractor, the furnishings and finishes directly influenced the structure, producing stunning results.

Most of this home’s furnishings, light fixtures, and even architectural details were custom created by the interior designer. A lounge area was designed in place of a formal dining room, which was thought to be too stuffy for laid-back living. The room also features hollow concrete tables and a built-in banquette under expansive windows for cocktail hour.

What We Love: This exquisite alpine ranch house offers a warm, welcoming home for hosting family and friends in both casual and formal settings. More intimate living spaces can be reconfigured when needed for larger gatherings, making this home quite unique. Breathtaking surroundings add to this home’s overall appeal, captured through large windows that invite the outdoors inside.

The home is filled with textures, defining spaces with rough-hewn timbers beside smooth plaster walls. The entryway features iron benches covered in leather, against walls wrapped in cowhide panels.

Clean-lined furnishings add a modern flair while leather and faux-fur adds hints of Western-style. A neutral color palette was used with reclaimed wood beams on the ceilings and walls refined with a wire wheel (a process that cleans old wood and brings out its color and character).

Wide-plank oak that arrived whitewashed was sanded and black-washed to give it a soft, weathered look on the floors. A few accents of eye-catching bold color were splashed throughout the home. The result is a home that strikes the perfect balance between surprise and tranquility, rustic and modern, texture, and color.

Above: Square iron tables welcome guests of four for casual dinner parties, yet for formal gatherings, the tables can be rearranged to host up to 14 guests.

Above: This guest bedroom features a custom-made platform bed of reclaimed wood with a wood-and-iron headboard. Finished with throw pillows in an array of fabrics, the bed is a perfect example of combining textural opposites.
