The majority of people don’t have huge bathrooms but that doesn’t mean you can’t get your relatively small bathroom to feel larger with some creative interior design.
There are several ways that you can make the best use of space in your bathroom to make it appear larger than it actually is. Doing so gives you an improved bathing and showering experience and makes your bathroom more appealing to visitors, or to potential buyers if you are selling your home.
The skill of effective tiling
The act of tiling a shower unit from the floor right the way to the ceiling is enough in itself to give an aura of space as it draws the eye. You can build on this effect by using larger tiles. This creates a more expansive design effect. You may think that you need to use a pale tile color to improve your shower space but this isn’t necessarily the case, you can get the effect of extra space just as easily with a darker shade.
If you want to break up the space you can do so by using different shades in the design. Start with a lighter colored tile in the bottom half of the shower, then introduce a darker contrasting shade as you get into the top section of the area. This can be especially effective if you have a window in the wall next to the shower which you can continue the design along to; it draws the eye to the feature which itself creates a more expansive feel to the room interior.
Designing with your tiling
You don’t need to restrict your contrasts to color. Changing the formation of your tiles can divert the eye and enhance the expansive effect. Start off with a horizontal formation from the ground up, and then change the orientation to vertical.
The practicalities behind complete shower tiling
Tiling your shower from top to bottom isn’t all about design. It might be a great way to give the room a makeover and a feeling of additional size, but it’s also got a practical application. If there are people in your home that are tall, having an extra tiled area can make it easier to place the shower head higher up on the wall. This makes for a far better showering experience for the taller members of the household.
Enhance the effect of your floor to ceiling tiling
If you’ve taken the time, and made the effort, to complete the tiling of your shower area what else can you do to help the design effect? One feature that’s worth considering is a skylight. If you are able to fit a skylight in the area above the shower the tiling in the area will draw the eye up to the light source giving a roomy and airy feel to the space. It’s a great addition to a fully tiled shower area.
