Boulder Junction Lodge is a charming lakeside cabin designed by David Heide Design Studio as a family retreat, located in Boulder Junction, a town in Vilas County, in northern Wisconsin. After having attended summer camp at this site in her youth, the owner was elated to have purchased the former lodge.

After a site visit and some forensic work, we all came to realize that the structure was unsalvageable. The original building was disassembled, with paneling, decorative trim, windows, hardware, and other features salvaged for the new build.

Small white cottage with green door, stone base, and red flower window box surrounded by pine trees

The new cabin is built from a knowledge of architectural history, an understanding of the site and the cabins that were here before, and a retelling of the owners’ history, the place they’ve loved, and the memories they’ve shared.

What We Love About This Home

This cabin is a testament to the power of memory and place, rebuilt from the ground up yet deeply rooted in the original camp spirit its owner cherished since childhood. We love how salvaged materials from the former structure were integrated into the new build, giving the interiors a lived-in warmth. From the cedar-paneled walls and stone fireplaces to the bunk room with its curtained sleeping nooks, every corner of this cabin feels designed for generations of summer memories to come.
