Nestled in the mountains of Highlands, North Carolina, this refined and thoughtfully curated mountain house was designed by Curated Studio as a hosting haven for a semi-retired couple with a deep passion for gathering family and friends. Conceived to seamlessly support a lifestyle centered around entertaining, extended family visits, and multigenerational gatherings, the home functions as beautifully as it looks.

Curated Studio led the project from initial floor plans through architecture, construction, and furnishing, taking a methodical, considered approach where every design decision was made in deliberate conversation with the next. With nearly all furnishings selected by the designers, the result is a cohesive, intentional interior with a strong sense of place.

Each room was thoughtfully tailored to its inhabitants, including dedicated spaces for the couple’s three children, with every family member contributing to the overall vision. The homeowners’ trust afforded the designers full creative freedom, striking a balance between functionality and character that feels both polished and deeply livable. The result is a home where family and guests alike feel effortlessly at home.

Homeowner’s Request

The goal was to create functional, free-flowing living spaces for entertaining family and friends. Blending seamlessly with the natural surroundings and letting the mountain views take center stage.

Rustic wet bar with rich walnut cabinetry, green marble slab backsplash, brass and glass open shelving, undermount bar sink with matte black faucet, marble countertop, twig-style drawer pulls, glass-front upper cabinets, and herringbone stone tile floor

The designer prioritized function and flow throughout, ensuring ample circulation and effortless movement from room to room. The color palette was carefully chosen to complement the natural surroundings rather than compete with them, drawing inspiration from the area’s changing seasons and featuring varying shades of green, rich browns, and deep terracottas to create a sense of warmth and tranquility native to the mountains.

Timeless, Neutral Kitchen

The interior captures the timeless charm of traditional cottage architecture,  warm, characterful, and thoroughly livable. Artisanal materials are paired with clean, simple surfaces throughout: salvaged post oak wood flooring in varying widths, reclaimed columns, tongue-and-groove paneling, and elegant quartzite countertops. The Pratt + Larson Craftsman collection ceramic backsplash tile adds color and texture, while tongue-and-groove walls painted in Benjamin Moore Soft Chamois and perimeter cabinets in Benjamin Moore Natural Cream keep the overall feel cohesive and inviting.

Storage was meticulously planned throughout this 238-square-foot kitchen, with every drawer and cabinet designed for specific purposes, including two large pullouts for oversized platters and cutting boards. To house the homeowner’s extensive china collection, cabinets were extended to the ceiling with single upper doors for easy viewing and access. Unlacquered brass hardware from Water Street Brass and a Perrin & Rowe bridge faucet add warmth and patina, while the Kohler Whitehaven apron-front cast-iron sink brings both durability and timeless appeal.
