Charlie & Co. Design is responsible for the transformation of this organic modern house nestled along Lake Minnetonka, about 16 miles west-southwest of Minneapolis, Minnesota. From a Victorian gingerbread farmhouse to a sleek, open, and modern abode, this beloved family home received the remodel of a lifetime to suit the owner’s evolving taste and lifestyle needs 

This whole-house makeover consisted of removing all interior and exterior finish and “starting over.” By removing all non-essential architectural elements and adding new cladding and windows to the exterior, the massing of this home was simplified. What We Love: This Lake Minnetonka house features a beautiful modern design with organic materials throughout. Large walls of glazing help to create a seamless connection to the surrounding nature, promoting a feeling of relaxation and tranquility. We love the warmth of the French oak flooring throughout the main living spaces and the blackened steel and glass partition that separates the entry from the kitchen and dining area.

Above: A rarely used stairwell in the kitchen was replaced by an elevator. A thoughtful touch for aging-in-place.

Above: This floating staircase features a simple composition of plaster, glass, and steel.

Above: The bathroom features a cement soaking tub and a large window framing views of nature.

Above: This “crow’s nest” room off the main bedroom features windows on three sides to capture soft light and is surrounded by views of nature. It’s the perfect place for meditation, yoga practice, or enjoying morning coffee with a good book. The A-frame wall treatment is a shou sugi ban charred-wood finish.

Above: On the exterior facade, the old siding was replaced with a beautiful weathered gray-brown cedar siding.

Above: The cedar siding incorporates a vertical orientation with alternating board widths, resulting in an elongated appearance reminiscent of tree bark texture.

Above: A new steel-and-wood pergola on the deck provides the ultimate gathering space for family and friends.
