This 1960s ranch-style house that was once full of small, dark rooms has been completely transformed by KGA Studio Architects, situated on a spacious lot in Cherry Hills Village, a suburb of Denver, Colorado. The homeowners, a family of four, loved the property’s mature landscaping but knew that the original 4,000 square home needed to be completely refreshed with a new floor plan layout.
The original dwelling had 8′ high ceilings and a chopped-up floor plan with several small rooms and narrow hallways. The goal of the new design was to preserve the original brick structure while creating a family home for today’s lifestyle. This would entail an open floor plan, ample space for entertaining, and an indoor-outdoor connection.

The architects opened up this home by raising the roof and eliminating several interior walls to create an open-concept floor plan for the kitchen, dining, and living areas. They enhanced the floor plan with a 900-square-foot owner’s bedroom suite. Additional improvements included a new front porch and a pergola in the backyard to improve the outdoor living spaces for entertaining.

A new, higher-pitched roof raised the ceilings, allowing the space to be flooded with natural light from the wall of windows that were added along the back of the home.
What We Love: This Colorado ranch house has been completely refreshed with an open and airy floor plan layout. Vaulted ceilings and dormer windows help to enhance the natural light in this beautiful home. We are loving the modern white and black color palette that has been carried through from the exterior into the interior. The outdoor living spaces are equally fabulous, providing this family with a wonderful new home for entertaining.

The only wall in the main living area is a partial center wall, which creates a sense of entry at the front door and anchors the kitchen on the other side.

A large center island is used for food prep, clean-up, and casual dining. This space features custom-designed, white-painted cabinetry, a subway tile backsplash, and white quartz countertops.
Above: The design of the owner’s bedroom was inspired by luxury hotel rooms. They desired simple, clean finishes and a quiet color scheme that would create a feeling of relaxation. The wood-beamed, tongue-in-groove ceiling features a beautiful jeweled light fixture.

Dormer windows were added to the new roof and the original brick structure was painted white, completely refreshing the home’s elevation.
