Villamar Design has designed and built this elegant farmhouse-style home for a young family, nestled on a sprawling 64-acre property in Saanich, a district municipality on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. The homeowners requested a modern farmhouse to raise their kids, live in, work, and enjoy. The home and garage encompass 4,495 square feet and the carriage house offers 695 square feet.
Text description provided by the architects: Our design process always includes visiting the site as one of the first components of the process. After meeting the family on the site and seeing the topography and learning about the land and its yearly conditions, we chose to layout the site for the home at the top of the back slope. It is set well off the street and commands an attractive entry.
This part of the site is free draining and does not flood. It is private, and to top it all off, it commands beautiful valley vistas.
The home entry is an elegant, covered porch allowing free conversations as visitors come and go from the dwelling. A garage faces the street but looks more like part of the home until you get closer; and once at the entry, you’re able to see the windows above the garage that house the legal secondary suite on the property. A mud and laundry room connects the garage to the main home and lodges the pantry and a separate office location just off the kitchen.
The kitchen, dining, and great room have several French doors that open out to the rear patio and firepit area. Both sides of the patio have covered decks that also serve as balconies for some of the upstairs bedrooms. There is a barn door-enclosed flex space at the top of the stairs used as a play area, and next to it, behind the beautiful owner’s suite (with sweeping views) is a well-appointed ensuite that connects to a large walk-in closet.
This home is a great collaboration of rooms and spaces designed to bring life and rest into the energy of a young family. There is a place for everyone here, including guests and visitors; and as time moves on the next residents will have to change nothing.
What We Love: This elegant farmhouse-style home offers a young family in British Columbia a light and airy space with modern touches. The home’s muted color palette and clean lines create a timeless look, while the thoughtfully incorporated contemporary accents give it a stylish and current edge. The exterior of this home is just as inviting as the interior. An open floor plan and an abundance of natural light evoke a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
