This serene lake cottage was designed by JAL Architects in collaboration with Mary Rossi Designs, located in Excelsior, a city in Hennepin County, Minnesota. Every detail was thoughtfully considered when building this beautiful new home. The homeowner desired a mix of contemporary with cottage style while integrating treasured family heirlooms into the decor.
To personalize this home, vintage pieces were reimagined in creative ways — blending old with new to strike a stylized balance and a pleasing design aesthetic. This stylized balance begins at the front door, which features a 1920’s leaded glass entry door rescued from an old estate.

Inside, the backdrop features a neutral color palette using shades of gray, warm taupe, and white, accented with an occasional splash of indigo blue inspired by lake living. This palette is carried throughout the home to make the open floor plan feel more cohesive.
The designer selected light fixtures that create patterns that mimic the way the sun causes light to reflect off the lake. Furnishings impart a sense of sophisticated warmth and style, without sacrificing function. The home portrays an elegantly casual feel that’s eclectic as if it has been assembled over a long period of life experiences.
Enameled white built-ins and wood shiplap ceilings contrasted by gray walls and dark wood floors give this cottage a crisp, updated classic feel. Natural textures of metal and glass, concrete, stainless steel, chrome, marble, and crystal lighting meld together to create a cottage-style look that’s both vintage and up-to-date.
In the powder room, black and white “Woods” wallpaper by Cole & Son is paired with a salvaged vintage sink. The dark gray tile on the floor was installed in a herringbone pattern; the same color was mimicked on the ceiling using paint for a chic, big impact look.
Serenity reigns in the second-floor owner’s suite, which includes a private office/sitting room. Pristine gray walls, white tongue, and groove ceiling with industrial metal and wood fans to keep the breezes moving on those warm summer nights.
The spa-like bath provides a soothing oasis, showcasing a combination of chrome and crystal accents, concrete countertops, marble tile floors, and a restored vintage clawfoot tub.
Just off the kitchen is a screened-in porch with a gas fireplace for much-needed warmth on cool evenings. This also helps to extend the homeowner’s outdoor summer days.
