This rustic-modern bungalow was renovated by Holder Parlette Architecture in collaboration with Dehn Bloom Design, located near downtown Mill Valley, California. This project’s roots began with a turn-of-the-century farmhouse, whose design developed from an interest in the dialogue between old and new, refined and raw. The open, loft-like interior spaces are connected by the distinctive look and feel of the lightly refinished, rock maple flooring — reclaimed from a sewing machine factory in Chicago.
In the re-design, the homeowners wished for their home to retain a large portion of the front yard for the children to have a play area. Therefore, the house was kept compact, yet with a vibrant front elevation, rather than sprawling outward. The exterior facade is clad in stucco and cedar. The style of the home has been described as rustic modern, respecting the past but adding a splash of fun. Above: The entryway flooring features graphic Moroccan concrete tiles.

Constructed in the 1920s, the interior walls of this 1,100 square foot bungalow were originally decorated with sponge-painting techniques. This home also came with a developer’s unrealized plan for a 1,400 square foot addition, along with dramatic makeover. The architect and designer worked together to modify these drawings. They opted to go in a new direction, giving this home a modern update while preserving key elements.
Just off the entry is an open concept living and dining room. Additional windows were integrated into the design to create bright and airy living spaces. Artwork throughout the interiors is by artist April Dawn Parker, selected to appeal to the designer’s scientific side.
What We Love: This rustic-modern bungalow renovation respects the past with a creative twist and a dash of fun. The designer added playful elements throughout the interiors while bringing in repurposed items, adding to the history of the home. The footprint was kept intact to preserve the front yard, which was once a place for Miwok Indians to gather. It is now a place for children to play and enjoy this home’s special surroundings. Overall, a beautiful design to be enjoyed for years to come… Readers, what you think of this renovation project. Any details you would like to have seen done differently? Tell us in the Comments!
