Indoor/outdoor connectivity defining mid-century modern Los Altos home

modern-exterior

This mid-century modern home was designed by Klopf Architecture in collaboration with Outer Space Landscape Architects, located in Los Altos, in the heart of Silicon Valley, California. A showcase for indoor-outdoor living, this 3,000 square foot open and airy home was designed with warm, modern interiors. The homeowners, a couple with two children, were inspired by mid-century modern design. They had purchased an older ranch style home, yet wished to replace it with something new and custom. There is a total of three bedrooms and two-and-a-half bathrooms.

The layout of this home is on a grid, designed with different activity zones: living, playing, cooking, dining and a piano space. A low-pitched gable roof over the great room creates a grand feeling in this space. Clerestory windows at the high-pitched area of the roof makes this grand space feel bright and airy.

What We Love: This mid-century modern design reflects bright and airy living spaces and a fantastic indoor-outdoor connection. The overall aesthetic is fresh and aesthetically pleasing, offering clean lines and minimalist interiors, letting the architecture speak for itself. Klopf Architects did a fabulous job of creating a brand new, Eichler-inspired atrium home with modern amenities.

Overall, the design of this house is similar to a custom, modern-day Eichler home in several ways. Inspired by mid-century modern design, the construction of this home uses today’s materials, approaches, standards, and technologies. The goals were to create an energy-efficient home with indoor-outdoor connectivity, plenty of natural light and flexible for young children to grow.

The bedrooms, bathrooms, playroom and sitting room are under flat wing-like roofs that balance on either side of the low-pitched gable roof of the main living space. Large sliding glass panels and pocketing glass doors encourages openness to the front and backyards.

Wood siding travels from exterior to interior, enhancing the indoor-outdoor relationship. The interior living spaces showcase a palette of white oak floors, white walls, walnut cabinetry, and dark window frames. This helps to unite all the spaces together to create a harmonious feeling and flow throughout the house.

Above: The custom designed cabinetry matches the minimal joinery that has been used in the rest of the home. This creates a trim-less, minimal aesthetic.
