This mid-century modern home was designed by Baldridge Architects, and built by Acero Construction, located in the Zilker neighborhood of Austin, Texas. The design of this home was inspired by the homeowner’s previous mid-century home in California—a 1959 brick bungalow. There was not anything the couple could find similar in Texas, so they commissioned the architects to build from scratch. Overall, the design is a modern house with a nod to American mid-century architecture.
The exterior of the home is an unassuming charcoal brick, resulting in an elegant and unassuming exterior. While on the interior, you will find bright white walls for contrast, with splashes of color and pattern throughout — mainly expressed in their modern art collection. Sleek furnishings from the 1950s to the ’70s are mixed with designer pieces. The overall feel of the interior is midcentury, yet a little crisper and cleaner. The homeowner’s were responsible for the interior design.
Offering an open plan layout, interior spaces offer a variety of mood and atmospheres to its inhabitants. Finishes includes ceramics and terrazzos, intermingled with honey-hued woods and high-polished chrome surfaces. While the interior represents a seamless mix of midcentury design from both the East and West Coasts, the exterior is purely Austin. Outdoors, a cluster of live oak trees at the heart of the property was the driving force of the home’s quirky L-shaped design. The carport features an electric car plug-in station.
