Industrial modern house boasts a serene lakeside setting in Minnesota

This industrial modern house was designed for a family of eight by ALTUS Architecture + Design, located on the Southwest shore of Lake Waconia, Minnesota. The dwelling is set next to a grove of 200-year-old oak trees, which inspired the architectural design—a bold, sculptural response to both the trees and lake. The goal was to integrate the home into it’s natural surroundings by using natural materials and plenty of transparency.

Spread out over two levels, this 5,500 square foot home was designed to promote the outdoors and the lifestyle needs of a busy family. A central living area was designed as a double story atrium, featuring expansive walls of glass that bathes the home in natural light while capturing views of the trees and beyond to the lake. The family activity space features a large indoor pool with direct access to the lake.

“The exterior materials differentiate the various program elements of the design, with the ground level being a warm white stucco, while the master wing is a deep auburn brick, and the children’s wing is wrapped in wood planks with a black brown stain and black aluminum panel edge details all under a dark bronze metal roof,” states the architects.

The exterior materials run through to the interior, creating continuity between the indoors and out. These materials form the living room atrium as a central void space. The entry canopy features weathering steel as a contrast to the stucco, carrying into the entry foyer as well.

The concrete flooring offers radiant heating, perfect for the cold winter months. Additional highlights includes a steel staircase and perforated blackened steel ceilings in the living room and kitchen, offering a industrial-modern aesthetic and reducing the cost of a finished space.

What We Love: This industrial modern home features breathtaking views of mature growth trees and a tranquil lakeside setting. Clean lines and sleek materials with a neutral color palette helps to not detract from the natural setting that surrounds this home. We are especially loving the double volume living room with its beautiful mix of materials and bright and airy atmosphere.
