Rustic-modern mountain ranch nestled in the rugged Montana landscape

This rustic-modern mountain ranch is a working bison ranch, designed by Pearson Design Group along with builders On Site Management, located in Western Montana. The property is nestled on the edge of the Bob Marshall Wilderness. The homeowners, an East Coast family, wanted this newly constructed working ranch to look as though it was part of the landscape for a century—yet with all the comforts of a modern home. The project consists of eleven buildings scattered throughout this rugged landscape. This includes a horse barn, manager facility, several outbuildings, a main residence, guest cabin and garages, as well as renovated and preserved antique cabins.

The two-story main house is constructed of lodgepole pine porches and rafters, reclaimed plank siding and a metal roof. On the interior you will find gorgeous re-stacked walls and trusses of antique hewn timbers—grounded by distinctive fireplaces. Reclaimed hemlock paneling on the walls and floor can be found throughout the main living spaces.

Above: The stone on the walls is Native Montana Moss Rock, sourced from various quarries across the region.

Additional highlights in this home includes hand-forged wrought iron hardware and lights by Firesong Forge, as well as custom hewn doors. A curated mix of the homeowner’s antique and modern furnishings reflects a truly authentic western spirit.

What We Love: This rustic-modern mountain ranch appears as though it has been on the property for a century, but with all the modern comforts. There is plenty of warmth throughout the interiors, with material elements of wood and stone and the use of texture in area rugs and fur blankets. Loving the customized features and reclaimed wood… and the stunning rugged landscape surrounding this home… Readers, please let us know in the comments what your overall thoughts are on the design of this ranch house!

I’m so sick of the overblown, ultra-expensive fake rustic home trend. Tell the high-wealth NY money managers to stay in NY. Locati got it right in the early days, and then it became “a thing” and lost its lustre. For people who have no access to their own imagination. Financial jobs do that to a person.

I was wondering what the name of the tile on the wall in the kitchen is? I
