Race Residence is a mountain contemporary vacation home that has been designed by Kelly & Stone Architects, located in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Positioned in an idyllic location with breathtaking views, this home was built for an active East Coast couple who wanted a second home for which they could eventually retire in. They escape to the 3,500 square foot home in all seasons, the summer for hiking and golf and the winter for skiing. This home was also to be a place where the owners could entertain their grown daughters and their husbands, so it needed to be spacious enough to have bedrooms to host their guests. Showcasing an open floor plan for entertaining, the interiors have been designed be very inviting and cozy when its just the two of them. A lower level offers guest spaces that have both public and private zones. The design considers aging in place (universal design), which includes wider doorways and in the master suite is a curbless shower.

Reclaimed oak flooring runs throughout most of the interiors, infusing warmth into the home. The living and kitchen areas feature an open layout that is conducive for gatherings. Since the homeowner loves to cook, the kitchen was designed with all the culinary necessities, and plenty of light to illuminate the space. A wall of windows allows natural light in and impeccable views out to the lush landscape and distant mountains. In the living room, soaring ceilings accented with wood beams makes the room feel spacious and windows capture the mountain vistas. With a neutral color palette for the furnishings and decor, a colorful painting adds vibrant splashes of color. A red area rug delineates the space, adding texture and warmth.

The master bedroom retreat showcases a sliding barn door and a stunning focal point of Cole & Son’s “Woods” wallpaper. It was the perfect selection since there are so many aspen trees in the area.

In the master bedroom, you can see how the designer’s created a curbless shower to cater to the homeowner’s as they get older. Walker Zanger tiles decorate the shower and a walnut vanity with a concrete countertop adds to the beauty of this space.

In this guest bedroom, a feature wall of repurposed barn wood and an antique bed frame gives the space a rustic cottage-like feel.

A second guest bedroom has been designed in a more modern style. Heated concrete flooring on the lower level creates low maintenance. All the bedrooms have doors that leads out to an open air patio space to enjoy the fresh mountain air and unparalleled views.
