This contemporary home in Mill Valley, California has undergone an incredible renovation for a family of four by Butler Armsden Architects. A couple with two children relocated from New York to California, needing their new home to be reimagined for their growing and changing family.
Built by a developer, the dwelling lacked personality, and living spaces were not efficiently utilized. The architects focused on aesthetics and functionality, beginning with small updates such as built-ins, furniture, and new paint colors; and expanded the scope over time to include lighting, windows, interiors, landscape, and beyond.

The renovations transformed this residence into a sensitively-designed home that is modern, but relaxed and welcoming. The main living area is spacious and airy and opens up completely to the outside, where the owners can have a soak in their hot tub or enjoy lunch by the garden, fully embracing the quintessential indoor/outdoor California lifestyle.
Sustainable and natural materials and finishes were selected to be used throughout this home. Inside, synthetic-free fabrics were used and materials were finished with linseed and tung oil. This level of attention to detail continues through to the traditional Finnish sauna, the reverse osmosis water filtration system, the solar panels, and even the plants that were selected for the garden.
What We Love: This Mill Valley home remodel offers its inhabitants completely revamped living quarters, providing a more welcoming habitat. Luminous spaces are warm and inviting despite the contemporary design aesthetic. The selection of new furnishings, accessories, and finishes transforms this home from an ordinary living space to a welcoming family home that can be enjoyed for years to come.
