Emerick Architects together with Lisa Staton Design have completed this full gut remodel of an old farmhouse, nestled on acreage with a rolling landscape in the Southwest Hills neighborhood of Portland, Oregon. A large addition was also added to the dwelling to meet the needs of this active family of six. It needed to be livable yet elegant, flowing seamlessly from floor to floor and from inside to outside.
The existing house had been remodeled and added onto several times throughout the years, so the architects worked to reorganize the layout. Working in tandem with the homeowners, the original farmhouse structure was reimagined to integrate the homeowner’s Southern California roots. Natural light now floods this home, imperative in the rainy Pacific Northwest months.

The designer thoughtfully curated a materials and color palette that is earthy, warm, layered, and casual, with a mix of modern and vintage. Central to the design were large spaces for cooking and entertaining, and plenty of space for books, with a library both upstairs and downstairs and cozy nooks to retreat to for downtime.
This home was crafted with plenty of warmth both in tone and texture while bringing in as much sunlight as possible to combat the rainy months.
What We Love: This old farmhouse in Oregon has undergone a complete transformation into a warm and inviting family home. Interior spaces are full of natural light with stylish details at every turn. We especially love the main bedroom with its vaulted ceiling and cozy reading nook with a fireplace for warmth and ambiance. Overall, the project team did a fabulous job of creating a harmonious flow throughout the interiors and to the outdoors.

Above: It’s typical to place a large piece of art or a mirror between sconces over a fireplace. But sometimes the less typical route can make a room sing! In this living space, the designer opted to decorate with an unusual grouping of art and a small mirror above the fireplace, sourced from Stahl + Band. The whole room became more playful, interesting, and inviting.
Above: With the pitched ceilings creating awkward lighting spots, the designer opted for directional downlight cylinders in an oxidized brass finish from @madegoods to illuminate the angled ceiling. As for the furnishings, curating several good reading spots was a priority for this bookworm family. This led the project team to create a cozy corner by the window with a sconce for reading, and a pair of Herbin Sherpa Lounge Chairs by Anthropologie bathed in the warm glow of the fireplace. The dresser is from Cisco Home.
