Historical Concepts in collaboration with Carter Kay Interiors has reimagined this home on the bayou, nestled along Contraband Bayou, a large bayou that runs through Lake Charles, Louisiana. The residence was originally designed in the 1970s by architect A. Hays Town, but was quite formal and no longer fit their lifestyle needs.
The owner’s children are all grown up with children of their own, so they wished for their home to be completely remodeled for entertaining with relaxed living spaces. A new design provides a Creole-style home that melds tradition with comfort, accentuated by details that are informed by the regionโs vernacular.

The architects gave thoughtful consideration to the building materials used in this home, especially the brick and mortar, traditional to the region. The landscape architect incorporated these materials into the front hardscape, becoming an integral feature of the arrangement of structures of this home (a two-story garage and dovecote flank the central home). An auto court was devised in place of a traditional landscape front yard.
Step inside to find soaring ceilings that provide light and airy living spaces while dissipating heat and allowing for airflow.
For the interior furnishings and finishes, Carter Kay Interiors introduced the homeowners to designer pieces from Atlanta showrooms and esteemed artisans, intermingled with treasured heirlooms and antiques. The overall aesthetic is welcoming and relaxed with an air of sophistication, perfect for the owner’s lifestyle needs.
A neutral backdrop of wood planking is layered with rich textures in an earthy color palette that is inspired by this home’s picturesque natural setting.
