This beautiful mountain-style lake house renovated by Vertical Arts Architecture is nestled on Lake Catamount in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The original home had a mishmash of rustic features and finishes and living spaces were compartmentalized. The objective was to create function, and flow while getting creative with the family’s playful style and maintaining a connection with the mountains.
Most of the original exterior flair was preserved, while the interiors were completely revamped, moving into modern and setting the mood for a more functional family home for lakeside living. Walking into the dwelling feels like a new kind of summer camp that has a crisp, natural palette and fresh modern feel.
To make a first impression in the entryway the architecture team immediately brightened up the space by raising the roof (literally) and adding a skybridge element with abundant natural light. The main level was completely reimagined with major changes made to the kitchen, mudroom, laundry room, and pantry to better utilize space.
The team added a wall of windows in the living room and optimized views of the lake throughout by rotating the kitchen and finishing a screened-in-porch to be added to the square footage of the home.
The varying-width plank reclaimed oak floors and reclaimed oak interior doors provide tactical texture against the modern white walls. Each space combines these textures and materials to achieve the earthy modern style as exemplified by the two-sided fireplace in the main living area with limestone surrounding a steel hearth and a wall of wooden slats that reveal the metal below.
In the kitchen, texture is layered into modern materials with stainless steel appliances, smoky glass with walnut cabinetry and island, handmade terracotta backsplash, and burnished brass stools. To complete this look Twenty1Five fabricated a 7-foot custom dining table with a resin river in the middle which serves as an art piece itself alongside the light fixture and is surrounded by plum leather chairs.
The redesign juxtaposes clean, simple, high-end finishes with whimsical and playful furniture that doesn’t shy away from patterns and color. Youthful, eclectic elements accessorize the main living spaces.
You’ll notice the 70s, mid-century influence in the design embodied by the ombre velvet kitchen booth and walnut table. Smooth leather is paired with funky modern styles and tactile details using woven materials and hammered metal to create a handmade vibe in each space.
The renovation was not without its quirks. It was discovered the dining room had an incomplete foundation, causing it to sink away from the home and allowing water intrusion. The architects sourced eco-conscious, organic, American-made, local, or reclaimed pieces to use throughout the home. The result is a rustic mountain remodel bringing a colorful, modern style to lakeside living.
What We Love: This mountain-style lake house offers an inviting mix of rustic and modern details for a comfortable lifestyle. The project team did a fabulous job of updating this home to meet the lifestyle needs of its inhabitants. The heavy use of wood throughout this home provides an abundance of warmth, which is much needed during the winter months. With lakeside views at every turn, we can imagine this would be a wonderful place to call home.

Upstairs, an expanded bathroom and upgraded finishes with the goal of making the guest suites more beautiful. The design team incorporated the same youthful lake house style with woven plaid and leather in various pops of color. They avoided tone-on-tone neutrals, opting for muddy blues and greens and rich orange and carmels. The earthy colors feel cozy yet fun at the same time.
