Risa Boyer Architecture has designed this three-story modern house clad in blackened cedar siding and blackened steel, located in Forest Highlands, Portland, Oregon. Anchored deep into the hillside, this spectacular dwelling cantilevers over the Willamette River.

The home was designed to provide a large, multigenerational family with an inspiring, comfortable space to gather and enjoy the scenic river and each other.

The top level encompasses the owner’s bedroom suite and study, designed to be a private sanctuary for the homeowners to take a break from the chaos of eight grandchildren. In addition to the main residence, a small “tree house” (on the right) guest suite sits adjacent to the house, offering another quiet area for guests.

The property is situated at the end of a private drive, on a very picturesque part of the river next to tall cliffs and a seasonal waterfall.

The lowest level is the family area, with the flexibility for three families and their children to stay. The middle level is the main gathering space, with an open floor plan and floor-to-ceiling sliding doors that create an indoor-outdoor living area cantilevered over the cliffs at the river’s edge.

What We Love: This modern house clad in blackened cedar siding offers a wonderful place for a large multigenerational family to gather under one roof. The floor plan layout is fabulous, where everyone has spaces to gather and spaces for privacy. The serene setting is perfect for those who enjoy nature and spending time in the great outdoors. We especially love the black and white combination color used to enhance this spectacular modern dwelling.
