An historic shingle style house in New England gets a beautiful makeover

Built in 1891, this historic shingle style house was completely reimagined by architectural studio SV Design, located in Cape Ann, a rocky cape in northeastern Massachusetts. This dwelling was originally used as a summer cottage and needed to be modernized with some tender loving care. The owners are a couple from Boston who were seeking for their next abode to be outside of the city.

They were drawn to the historic charm of this residence but it was in need of a major update. The last time this home saw a renovation was in the 1970’s and the living spaces were dated. The project team worked to update this home with current technological advances, preserve historic details and provide a harmonious flow that embraces function and timeless design that meets the owner’s lifestyle needs.

The architects collaborated with the owner in using several of their expert services, which included architecture, interior design, landscape design, and decor and furnishing services. They reimagined the property by bringing the homeowners vision to life while as the same time respecting this home’s historical past.

The architects re-designed the layout and flow of the floor plan so it would be more functional for daily living. Modern elements were integrated into the design along with a minimalistic landscape.

What We Love: This historic shingle style house offers light and airy living spaces that are completely modernized to todays design trends. We are especially loving the newly revamped kitchen with its white marble countertops and backsplash beautifully contrasting against the blue cabinetry. The operable window invites fresh breezes into the interior while also capturing views of the landscape. The butcher block with integrated sink is also a nice detail that gives warmth to the space.

Tell Us: What do you think of the overall aesthetics of this historical home transformation? Let us know in the Comments below!

Cooktop Is Wolf’s transitional framed induction which comes in 30″ and 36″ sizes. The steamer is Wolf’s transitional framed 15″ module with what appears to be a customized lid (but with the included glass top handle). Not sure about the ovens.
