This reimagined house has astounding mountain views in North Carolina

rustic-mountain-home-exterior

This rustic mountain home was renovated by Allard Robert Interior Design, located in Arden, a community in southern Buncombe County, North Carolina. The original home was a custom-designed spec home built by a local builder/developer. When the new owners purchased this property, they were eager to put their own stamp on this remarkable mountain dwelling.

It was full of rich details such as the exposed timber frame in the living room, walnut and oak features throughout, and magnificent views of the valley below. Some of the finishes were not to the owner’s taste. The designer collaborated with them to adjust those features and to source furnishings and decor throughout. Continue below to see the “before” images of this home…

The first architectural features addressed were the kitchen backsplash, which was once a busy mosaic of glass tiles. Instead, the designer opted for slabs of silver travertine for a more subdued kitchen and replaced the countertops with honed quartz for ease of maintenance and a bright, fresh compliment to the dark oak cabinetry.

They replaced several of the light fixtures with more subtle and sophisticated options like the fixture in the dining room and stairway. Finally, they sourced furniture and decor from regional vendors and makers in North and South Carolina.

Several features, such as the living room coffee/cocktail table and the dining table were custom made locally. Fabrics and finishes are robust, such as Crypton-treated dining chairs, so that the homeowners can enjoy the house with their family and grandchildren and not worry about spills or stains. Recliners were sourced for the living and family rooms. Furnishings were selected to be comfortable and functional as well as beautiful.

To complete each space, the designer fabricated custom bedding and window treatments, and selected artwork from local galleries for a finishing touch. The homeowners now entertain on a regular basis and receive compliments on their newly refreshed home from their guests. Their home is now transformed into a customized space where they can make meals and memories with loved ones, which was the goal!

Hope the owners had a civil engineer experienced in evaluating slope movement and landslides look at the lot before building. You see a lot of these wonderful looking homes from the front that have a chasm for a back yard. There is no insurance against landslides.

this is a subtle renovation of a house that does not appear to be that old. the most obvious differences can be seen in the kitchen where it was a good decision to go to a lighter color scheme for the backsplash and counter top. this goes to show that you don’t always have to make a renovation project into a massive undertaking: relatively small changes can make a big difference.

other than the kitchen, you are mostly comparing a empty house in the “before” photos to a furnished house in the “after” photos.
