This inviting modern home was renovated by Anacapa Architecture, nested in the hills of Montecito, California with views of the Santa Ynez mountains. The project team was presented with the challenge of developing a bold design with a modest budget for this 2,500 square foot refuge.
In collaboration with the homeowner, the team created a unique residential character and focused on orienting the design around the propertyโs surrounding environment. On the North facade of the structure, breathtaking views of the Santa Ynez mountains are captured through moving glass wall systems.

The renovation retained the dwellingโs existing footprint and structure, yet the architects completely reimagined the interior floor plan, focusing on creating gathering spaces in the central kitchen and living areas.
The material palette was refreshed to complement the natural tones and textures of the surrounding natural environment. The original structure had enclosed accessory spaces. To address this, the architects developed an open and airy main living area, freeing up the exterior enclosure to capture sweeping views of the surrounding hills.
What We Love: This beautifully transformed home in the hills of Santa Barabara county features inviting indoor/outdoor living spaces. The project team did a fabulous job of reimagining this home to create an open and airy feel to a compact footprint. They brilliantly connected the interiors with the exteriors to bring nature and natural light inside. We are especially loving the serene outdoor living environment with the spectacular views of the Santa Ynez Mountains.

Interior surfaces, including carpet, vinyl flooring, and wood cladding, were removed and replaced with concrete and smooth gypsum siding. Opening interior spaces and incorporating walls of glass helped flood the interiors with natural light and modernize the home. Previously dropped ceilings were removed, exposing the wooden ceiling structure to create a feeling of spaciousness.
The original board and batten siding on the exterior facade were replaced with weathered shou sugi ban siding.
The accompanying guest house and the surrounding landscape were also updated, modernizing the fireplaces, social areas, and native plantings.
