Architecture studio Land to Living has transformed an aging property into a midcentury modern mountain retreat in Alpine Meadows, in North Lake Tahoe, California. The home is called “Hazel’s Hideaway”, which was once the summer hideaway of the 1940’s Hollywood actress, Hazel Court Taylor.

Modernizing the function, enhancing the experience of nature, and paying homage to Hazel’s glamorous yet rugged spirit were paramount to the vision for this mountain dwelling. The architects added just under 2,000 square feet to the original structure, which now boasts three bedrooms, three-and-a-half bathrooms, and a two-car garage.

The addition of a garage, kitchen and outdoor living space created possibilities for expanded private areas and open living areas.  The visual impact of the addition was mitigated by enveloping the garage and kitchen with a living roof of high alpine succulents to blend with the landscape.

The exterior features a one-of-a-kind copper roof as well as a green roof on another section, and copper paneled chimneys.
