Modern-rustic log cabin preserves historic charm in Steamboat Springs

rustic-exterior

This modern-rustic log cabin was designed by Gerber Berend Design Build, nestled on a tree-lined residential neighborhood in Old Town Steamboat Springs, Colorado. This is a rare property, set within walking distance of restaurants and shops, yet confined in a natural enclave that is cozy and private. The cabin is just three blocks from the heart of downtown Steamboat Springs! After taking a step through the home’s antique oak and frosted glass courtyard doors, it becomes apparent that you have entered into a world all its own. A sanctuary of eclectic historic structures surrounded by lush gardens and intimate patios.

The cabin overlooks a majestic meadow surrounded by the meandering Soda Creek below. The original cabin had plenty of functionality, yet was missing main living spaces and a master bedroom suite that matched with the current value of the property. From the onset, the vision was clear for the creation of this critical spaces. The renovation needed to respect the historic nature of the property and the chaotic yet functional configuration of the existing structure.

The architects created an addition that blends seamlessly into the fabric of the entry courtyard. As with previous modifications to the property, it is hard to tell the difference between the original historic from the more recently introduced forms. “Subtle carved log details, traditional long shed and simple gable features remain consistent within an expanded framework of chinked log and sage stained clapboard siding,” states the architects.

A casually elegant exterior facade gives way to white-painted, wood planked entry walls, continuing the existing cottage theme. Reclaimed hand hewn log slabs in the great room provides a warm, rustic contrast. While the kitchen features eclectic, antique faux-painted cabinets and reclaimed rafter beams/ceiling boards. This reinforces the casual atmosphere, while expansive lift-and-slide glass doors creates an intimate connection with the outside covered living spaces.

What We Love: This modern-rustic log cabin is a beautiful display of finely-crafted, warm wood and subtle steel details. Furnishings, accessories, and finishes become the colorful jewels and playful surprises within the structure. The result is an historic cabin that has been updated to showcase a comfortable yet sophisticated design aesthetic, set on a unique property in Old Town Steamboat… Readers, what do you think of this home, could you imagine living here?
