Striking transparency defines wood-cladded Bridgehampton home

This stunning contemporary wood-cladded home was designed by Bates Masi Architects, nestled on an acre property in Bridgehampton, New York. Encompassing 6,500 square feet of living space, the goal of this project was to have multiple activities take place with minimal disruption to family members. A dinner party could transpire in one area of the home, while children could be entertained in another space. Guests could come and go while the rest of the family would not be disrupted.

Having these program requirements set the floorplan layout of the home, all the while creating view corridors from front to back. The spaces were designed with ample transparency to have visual acuity of what is going on throughout the home, while providing a connection to the outdoors. A sculptural fireplace is at the heart of the home, which not only provides visual separation of spaces, but also acts as a unique focal point and conversation piece.

The residence features a limited material palette, showcasing beautiful travertine as the flooring for the terraces, while also cladding portions of the exterior facade. Independent boxes were designed for the structure of this home, with each one designed based on it’s programmatic uses. Each of the boxes features their own audio, video and climate controls, operating independently of on another. The length, height and volume of each is based on the activity in these spaces.

“The separation of program into individual volumes allows the multitasking lifestyle of the homeowners to continue into their home,” states the architects. Multitasking on a daily basis may seem chaotic, yet organization is developed through architecture. The design of this new home enables the owners to keep up with their busy lifestyle, while also offering respite from it.

What We Love: This wood-cladded home provides a beautiful overall layout and fantastic transparency that allows for an indoor-outdoor connection. The perfectly framed views of the outdoor courtyards and beautiful landscaping with the ornamental grasses. Another great design feature in this home is the repetition of mahogany and travertine throughout, while helps to blur the lines between interior and exterior… Readers, please share with us what design features of this home catches your eye in the comments below!
