Magnificent shingle-style beach house overlooking the Atlantic Ocean

This modern shingle-style beach house was designed by Ike Kligerman Barkley is nestled on a hillside overlooking the Atlantic Ocean in New England, Massachusetts. The architect fondly calls this home “the upside down house”, as it is arranged with the main living spaces on the upper level and the private—bedroom zones, on the lower level. This also allows the main living spaces to be more bright and airy, while maximizing the views to the ocean. The bedrooms areas are kept more cool, designed lower on the hillside setting. They also have their own private access to the landscape.

From the exterior facade, the home is clad with classic New England style materials— granite and cedar shingles. The entire home was framed based on maximizing views of the water, cliffs and woods. On the interior, most of the rooms are clad in cypress planks, running across the walls. Most of the windows were designed to be wider instead of tall, inspired by the horizon. “Everything is meant to echo where the sky meets the water and the water meets the land,” states the architect.

What We Love: The design of this shingle-style beach house reflects a unique style, reversing where the main living spaces and private living spaces are located. From the heavy use of wood on the exterior and then repeated on the interior, this home exudes a welcoming warmth.
