Step inside a chic modern barn style home in Mill Valley

This modern barn style home was designed for family living by designer Tineke Triggs of Artistic Designs for Living, located in Mill Valley, California. The 2,715 square foot interiors are characterized by a casual yet elegant aesthetic. There are a total of four bedrooms, two-and-a-half bathrooms in this home, plenty of space for the couple and their new born baby.

Inside this two-story home you will find a neutral color scheme that is soothing to the eye. A sunlit family room is enveloped in sliding glass walls, blurring the lines between indoors and out. Layers of texture can be found throughout, from the rich leather and wool fabrics to the fluffy faux fur, brass accents and polished and rustic woods.

Since the couple already had one child and were planning to have more, the designer made sure to select fabrics and finishes that were super durable. Indoor-outdoor living is plays a key role in this family’s life, so the designer planned a large outdoor living space. Walls of glass in the family room can be folded back to expand the indoor living spaces outwards. The concrete flooring material also was used on the deck to create a seamless transition.

Several seating arrangements were designed to enjoy this outdoor area, all of which are angled to view the television in the family room. A dining area and outdoor kitchen sit under the porch to protect the homeowners from the elements while they enjoy dining al fresco. A concrete firepit surrounded by plush seating offers a great spot to view the game. The small outdoor structure you see across the way serves as a home gym/man cave. The family also grows their own crops to use for cooking.

Above the glass panels is a brushed beadboard, which turned out to be a lucky accident. While the painters were working on sanding down the first coat of paint on the beadboard, the designer noticed the unique look it provided. Before the painters applied a second coat of paint, the design decision was to leave the beadboard with a more weathered aesthetic.

Everything in this home works so well together, with a clean aesthetic that still feels very livable. The small details is what makes it so unique, from the stairway light fixture to the weathered beadboard in the family room. A fantastic mix of modern, rustic and elegant… simply stunning!
