This stunning modern home was designed for a family of six by Aamodt Plumb Architects in collaboration with Vaughn Miller Studio, nestled on the shores of Lake Austin, Texas. The goal of this project was to design spaces that feel warm and comfortable, with an open layout that makes entertaining a breeze. At the same time having a strong indoor-outdoor connection to the natural beauty that surrounds the home.
The property itself was relatively flat, which made building and planning more simplified. Surrounded by mature growth trees, this allows some natural shading to encourage a green landscape. The home is nestled right on the waterfront, where a dock allows them access to boating and fishing. The site also offers views across the lake to a prominent landmark, Mount Bonnell.
The concept for this home was to maximize the views and be fully integrated into the site. The home’s layout needed to work around the existing trees. An additional goal was to create expansive outdoor living areas to cater to the family’s lifestyle needs. The interiors reflect modern spaces with clean lines, where exquisite craftsmanship was sought in the details. From the exterior, the two-story home feels grand, but on the interior, it is warm and inviting. On the waterfront side, the exterior has a more relaxed vibe, since this is where the family spends most of their time. Another goal was for the residence to be energy-efficient and constructed with high-end, durable materials of limestone, ipe and slate.
Almost every room looks out onto a patio, courtyard or balcony, and most have views of Lake Austin. There is also a guest house on the property, since the homeowners enjoy entertaining out of town guests. When selecting furnishings and finishes, the designers goal was to enhance the architecture. She took a cue from the surrounding site, picking up on outdoor hues and drawing them into the interior.
