This  magical stone clad residence was designed as a new home for a young family by McAlpine Architects, located in Mountain Brook, Alabama. Built in 2011, the exterior of the home showcases gabled roofs that echo the neighborhoods 1920s English style houses and cottages. Upon entrance to the H-shaped plan home, one is welcomed with views straight through to the back garden. The interiors boast a soft color palette and cozy atmosphere, inviting you to get comfortable.

“I wanted it to be atmospheric, soft and a little bit foggy, a house is not just visual, it should be sensual,” states the designer. The living area offers double height ceiling and a variety of seating arrangements which gives the space a nice scale and the illusion of intimacy. Spans of handmade leaded windows allows natural light to penetrate throughout the spaces. Wire-brushed oak floors offer a tactile finish, along with wood-hewn beams in the living area.

A cozy fireplace accented by a plush chair greets guest upon arrival into the concrete tiled front entryway. The soft and fluffy goatskin rug, although seemingly decadent and possibly inappropriate for someone walking in with muddy boots, is actually a great selection since the rug is full of lanolin and stays clean.
