This mountain dream retreat was designed custom designed by Young & Young Architects together with Allard + Roberts Interior Design, located in the Grand Highlands community in Western North Carolina. A California couple wished to relocate to the East Coast, after years of living in a small cramped home and being crowded together with a large labrador puppy, a teenager, while both trying to work from home during COVID.

They knew they needed more room to breathe, work, and live, and had settled on this property with sweeping long-range mountain views. They consulted with the project team to design and build their dream home, where they would live full-time upon retirement. The owners went through a years-long process of custom-designing their home and building it from scratch to meet their aesthetic and functional lifestyle needs.

Many of the furnishings were custom-designed through the interior designer’s vast network of local and regional furniture makers and artisans. Among items sourced locally and regionally were the cabinetry and built-ins, stone slabs and tiles, area rugs, lighting fixtures, upholstery, custom case goods like the dining and coffee tables, artwork throughout, and accessories like the mid-century pottery mixed into the decor.

The designers mixed in vintage and new objects with the homeowner’s existing leather book collection and other personal artwork and accessories, ensuring a personalized approach to detailed interiors.

Now the homeowners have room to work, live, and entertain… and their 90+ pound fur baby has plenty of room to roam! No more cramped spaces for this family, as they can work or relax while watching storms or sunny days and the change of seasons through the vast walls of glass.

The craftsmanship in this home is exquisite, from the beautiful staircase design to the built-in cabinetry and ceiling details. We love so much about this home, especially the great room, with its interesting ceiling changes, large windows, and stylish furnishings. Overall this home is the perfect blend of warmth, elegance, and functionality.
