Peterssen Keller Architecture, together with Martha Dayton Design has crafted this gabled cottage-style house that combines traditional charm with modern touches, situated in Kenwood, a neighborhood in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The property features a wooded backyard with a pathway that leads through a meadow and down to the Kenilworth Trail.
To top it off, the home is only a block from Lake of the Isles and Cedar Lake, not much further away… plenty of outdoor perks! The design of the home brings a fresh, clean-lined aesthetic to the traditional cottage typology. An open front porch invites you inside this traditional-style home, which melds into its historic neighborhood.
Encompassing 3,936 square feet over two levels, design studio Martha Dayton Design, did a superb job of creating welcoming interior spaces. Warm materials of bright blue accents contrast beautifully with richly detailed enameled woodwork. At the heart of the home is the multifunctional great room, which has become the center of this young family of five’s life.
A modern, open floor plan extends out to the wooded backyard, providing a sense of country living, which is rare in an urban location. The home also provided the family with a spacious kitchen for cooking and entertaining. Completing the look, crisp white interiors with richly stained hardwood floors throughout the main living spaces.

Additional Details: The family room features a 16-foot wall of double sliding glass doors, when open, its gives this space the feeling of a screened-in porch. This helps to blur the boundaries between indoors and out and extends the open floor plan outside. The second level was reconfigured to add a nursery, while a basement offers high ceilings to accommodate a relaxing media room and playroom with a kitchen.
Above: A mudroom features built-in storage and expanses of glass to bring in natural light and views of the wooded backyard. The vibrant orange of the barn door acts as a piece of art against the white walls. The best part, the homeowner wanted a barn door in her home after being inspired by one on Pinterest!
