Architecture and design studio Messana O’Rorke are responsible for the creation of this stunning mountain home getaway located in Jackson, Wyoming. Boasting breathtaking views of the Grand Teton mountains, this home was created to feel at one with its rugged mountainous surroundings while respecting the traditional character of the neighboring residences.

Traditional building materials and architectural details of stone, wood, and pitched roofs were integrated into this modern home that works within the constraints of the community design guidelines. This was all done without compromising the architect’s meticulous approach to space planning and form-making.

“Inspired by the humble vernacular residences of nearby Mormon Row—a late-frontier Wyoming settlement built by members of the Church of Latter Day Saints— the design of this home straddles the nineteenth to twenty-first centuries, resolving the potentially contradictory demands of contextual sensitivity and contemporary brio,” states the architects.

To lighten the visual impact of this 5,000-square-foot mountain pad, the architects separated the structure into four volumes connected via see-through glass bridges that create the impression of independent pavilions arrayed in a line. The dwelling is variously clad in stained cedar and stone, accentuating the pavilions’ individual identities.

The center of the house encompasses the living room, dining area, and kitchen. Two walls feature massive pocketing glass doors that, in desirable weather, open the interior to a wondrous embrace of the surrounding landscape and views.

Throughout the crisply detailed interiors, wide-plank French oak floors flow beautifully with the vertical elevations of wire-brushed oak that have been finished with a warm gray stain.

The interior materials work in harmony with the cedar and stone combination on the exterior to lend an alternating rhythm to the distilled composition. Neither hopelessly nostalgic nor aggressively contemporary, the house rests on the land with a sense of calm and grace, bridging the past and present life of the American West.

At the front of the facade, a fire pit is set next to a reflecting pool that provides an idyllic spot to appreciate the warm glow of the setting sun reflected on the mountains. On the opposite side, a courtyard created by the staggering of the pavilions contains an outdoor kitchen and dining table, perfect for entertaining.
