This midcentury modern house was beautifully refreshed by ODS Architecture, nestled into a hillside cul-de-sac in the Oakland Hills neighborhood of Oakland, California. Mixed in with a group of mid-century homes at the end of the street, this dwelling offered a unique design that attracted the homeowners to undertake a major overhaul.
The owners are creative and artistic, and their children are active and into sports — all taken into consideration when reimagining this home to meet their lifestyle needs. A light design touch was used since the bones of the house were in good shape — they just needed clarification, focus, and updating. The entry hall becomes a room of its own with a new powder room and an abundance of storage.
Constructed in the late 1950s this 3,000-square-foot home had some awkward stairs connecting the downstairs family room to the upper-level living areas. One was outside and seldom used, and the other in the center of the house was an impediment.
This problem was solved with a new stair at the front entry which allowed opening up the floor with tall vaulted ceilings, larger windows to the views, and combining kitchen/dining/living functions in a high-ceiling luminous space.
A palette of medium-toned oak and other woods in the cabinets and floors serves as a backdrop for the family’s collected art and accessories. Bold black-and-white accents provide visual pop and help to visually connect everything.
What We Love: This midcentury modern house offers a family a sweeping remodel to accommodate their lifestyle needs and personal style tastes. Updating materials, finishes, and furnishings throughout this home, it now offers a bright and airy palette that is warm and welcoming. The outdoor spaces were also beautifully updated to provide areas for both relaxation and activity while maximizing its hillside location to showcase the San Francisco Bay views.

Note: Have a look at a couple of other amazing home tours that we have showcased here on One Kindesign in the Northern California region: Before and After: A midcentury California home gets a stunning new look and Rustic mountainside home with picturesque views of the Sierra Nevadas.
The lower floor family room becomes an activity area complete with a drum set, a television-watching area with an adjacent guest suite with a new bath.
Stepping outside the home you will find a large play area with a basketball hoop and skateboard rail.
The hillside was maximized to create various outdoor activity areas that are both quiet and active. A new bay window with a built-in seat and a small private deck provide sweeping views over the San Francisco Bay. Just off the kitchen, an expansive deck was built as a gathering spot for outdoor dining or hanging out, sheltered from the elements.
